Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George has authorized the dismissal of nearly 100 Ghana Post staff, citing efficiency and cost-cutting as the primary reasons.
This decision comes on the heels of an ongoing staff rationalization exercise at the ministry leading to the dismissal of staff in several agencies under the ministry.
Addressing the media in Parliament House, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, acknowledged that the move may have raised eyebrows but emphasized that it was necessary and not arbitrary.
“People have raised questions about the staff rationalization ongoing at the ministry,” he stated.
“But if you are a minister and you take over a ministry that has 3,117 staff in the ministry and its agencies, and you realize that almost 600 of them were recruited after December 7th, basically, you cannot expect me to come and inherit such mess and continue with it.”
Sam George stressed that the rationalization exercise was aimed at streamlining the ministry’s operations and ensuring that it is “legal, clean, and efficient.”
He noted that the exercise would continue, with the ultimate goal of making the ministry more effective in carrying out its mandate.
The Minister’s decision to sack the Ghana Post staff is not an isolated incident.
Recently, he also terminated the appointment of Kwadwo Gyamfi Osafo-Maafo as Director of Cyber Security at the National Communications Authority (NCA), sacked some staff at GIFEC and all the Regional Directors of the NCA across the country.
He lamented that he has been tasked to oversee the development of Ghana’s communication sector, adding that his efforts to rationalize the ministry’s staff and operations are seen as a key step towards achieving this goal.
However, the move has also raised concerns about job security and the potential impact on the livelihoods of those affected.
