A s Ghana intensifies preparations for the much-anticipated 3×3 Hoop Rave Basketball Championship, Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has thrown his support behind the initiative during a courtesy visit by the Ghana Basketball Federation (GBF) at his constituency.
Sammy Awuku, warmly received the GBF entourage, led by its president, Ato Van-Ess, as part of the Federation’s nationwide tour promoting the championship.
The team had previously visited the Ashanti, Bono, Western, Volta, and Central Regions before making their stop in the Eastern Region.
Speaking during the engagement, Sammy Awuku praised the efforts of the Federation in using basketball as a development tool, especially among the youth.
He remarked, “Sports is a unifier, a mobilizer, and a critical development tool. This championship will not only unearth talent but also bring together young people from across the country to showcase their skill and passion.”
The 3×3 Hoop Rave Championship is scheduled to take place from April 10 to April 12 at the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom, a notable sporting venue in Accra.
The competition is expected to feature 42 Senior High Schools—18 girls’ teams and 24 boys’ teams—from various regions across Ghana.
“I am proud to endorse this tournament. As someone who has always believed in youth empowerment through sports and education, I see this as a pivotal moment for Ghana basketball,” he said.
Ghana’s growing influence in 3×3 basketball adds significance to the championship.
The country’s Men’s team finished second to Algeria at the 13th African Games, showcasing the potential of Ghanaian talent on the continental stage.
The Women’s team also performed admirably, narrowly missing out on a medal.
GBF President Ato Van-Ess expressed gratitude for the warm reception and called on other stakeholders to rally behind the sport.
“We are deeply encouraged by the MP’s support. His endorsement is a testament to the growing confidence in Ghana basketball. The 3×3 format is dynamic and appeals to the youth—this is the future of basketball,” he stated.
With this momentum, the GBF is optimistic that the upcoming 3×3 Hoop Rave Championship will mark a turning point for basketball development in Ghana, building on the success of the national teams and the increasing interest at the grassroots level.
