In a ceremony held on Friday, March 28, 2025, Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, swore in the new executive of the Parliamentary Press Corps at the Parliament House in Accra.
The Speaker used the occasion to emphasize the importance of the media in the functioning of Parliament and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the Press Corps has the necessary resources to effectively perform its duties.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Bagbin acknowledged that the media serves as an essential link between Parliament and the citizens of Ghana, facilitating the dissemination of important information about parliamentary activities.
He recognized that the work of the Press Corps is fundamental to transparency and public engagement, making it imperative to provide them with the tools and support needed to carry out their work efficiently.
“You are not just employees of your media organizations, but also a vital arm of Parliament’s communication efforts,” Bagbin stated.
He went on to clarify that providing the Press Corps with adequate resources would not interfere with their independence but rather empower them to fulfill their responsibilities in line with the public’s right to information.
In a move aimed at improving the operational capacity of the Press Corps, Bagbin directed the Deputy Clerk in charge of Speakership, Media, and Membership to facilitate the installation of internet connectivity in the Press Office.
He also committed to organizing frequent workshops and providing essential materials, including annual budget statements, the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament, and the updated Standing Orders of Parliament, to support accurate reporting on parliamentary proceedings.
Alban Bagbin further reassured the Parliamentary Press Corps that the leadership of Parliament would continue to extend the same level of support to them as it does to other service personnel stationed in Parliament, such as those from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Ambulance Service, and Ghana Health Service.
Simon Agianab, the newly sworn-in Dean of the Press Corps, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Speaker for his continuous support over the years.
On behalf of his colleagues, Simon Agianab promised to work tirelessly to ensure that the Press Corps continues to serve as an effective conduit for Parliament’s work, keeping the public informed and engaged.
Other executives of the newly sworn-in Parliamentary Press Corps include Stephen Odoi Larbi (Vice Dean), Kweku Sekyi Danso (Secretary), Francis Ekow Annan (Vice Secretary), Deborah Dzivenu (Treasurer), Ibrahim Alhassan (Organiser), and Kweku Ansah (Executive Member).
