A horrific bus accident in the Okere District of the Eastern Region has left several school children feared dead, while many others are seriously injured.
The tragic incident occurred at Aseseeso, a community situated between Adukrom and Somanya, when a bus carrying students from Ben Kunadu SDA Basic School veered off course and plunged into a deadly crash.
Chaotic Scene
The accident took place on Friday, March 28, 2025, when the bus, registered GV 83-22, was descending the Aseseeso hill.
The vehicle, which belonged to Collins Senior High School in Asante Agogo, reportedly lost control and somersaulted multiple times before finally landing on its side.
Witnesses on the scene have described the event as catastrophic, with some survivors still trapped beneath the wreckage.
At the time of the accident, the students were en route to Akosombo for an educational excursion, an activity meant to enrich their learning experiences.
Rescue Efforts
The response from local authorities was swift. Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, was passing through the area when the tragedy occurred.
Upon witnessing the devastation, she immediately joined the rescue efforts.
Awatey assisted in transporting some of the injured students to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital in Somanya for urgent medical care.
The rescue operation, involving the police, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the National Ambulance Service, has been ongoing since the accident.
Emergency responders were working diligently to free any survivors from the wreckage while also recovering the bodies of those who tragically lost their lives.
Casualties
The exact number of casualties has not been confirmed, but initial reports suggest that several bodies have already been recovered from the wrecked bus.
Tragically, others remain feared trapped under the mangled remains of the vehicle.
