In a shocking revelation, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that 150 Ghanaians are currently in detention centers across the United States, awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry.
According to him , the information was obtained from the Washington mission, which has been closely monitoring the situation.
“Currently, there are 150 Ghanaians in detention across various centers in the US who are awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry,” he stated in Parliament.
The Minister further revealed that 50 individuals have received final deportation orders from the court, with deportations expected to occur by mid-2025.
“The remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed,” he added.
This development has raised concerns about the conduct of some Ghanaian nationals abroad and the need for increased awareness and education on the consequences of illegal activities.
The Ghanaian government has been working closely with US authorities to ensure that its citizens are treated fairly and humanely.
In some instances, the Ghanaian authorities have intervened on behalf of their citizens.
For example, representations were made to US authorities on behalf of one Ghanaian on grounds of ill health, and he has been released to seek medical care.
Additionally, three Ghanaians have been processed and scheduled to depart from the US on commercial flights on 19th March 2025, 28th March 2025, and 1st April 2025 respectively.
Furthermore, 10 Ghanaians have been interviewed by the Embassy to verify their nationality and ensure that they have received a fair hearing.
